After I wrote about online backups from Data Deposit Box, I was surprised how many questions I had about it. The big issue that came up was backing up pictures and music. Even just one full 16gb iPod backed up online would cost $32/mo. Obviously too expensive.
But these online backup services are not meant for your media files. For your media files, you'll want a couple of external hard drives like those on our page of recommended Backup Storage Drives.

Where's your backup?
Seriously, if your computer was to crash now, in the next 5 minutes, where is your backup? Can you get to it quickly? Is it up-to-date? Today, this week, month? Year?
I know, I know, you've been meaning to get to that. On the to-do list.
tick tick tick, click click click - there goes your drive!

It happens. The war against Virus's, viruses, virii, is endless and ever changing. Sometimes, even with multiple virus scanners, a new virus can slip through. Yes, even on super-geek's computer. Anyone who thinks they are smart enough to catch every possible attack is just an uninformed fool.
There are so many paths of attack, especially on Windows. (you ARE patching, aren't you?). Mac and Linux users might be safer (not 100% though), but let's be real... percentage wise, these users a minority.
So, what does a geek do when infected, or suspects an infection? Well, besides the standard virus scanning, there is a powerful program that can really scrape the crap off your computer. MalwareBytes.org. I know, it actually sounds like one of those fake anti-spyware programs that pop up a virus warning so you install their software which is actually spyware. Oh... but it's not. Spyware actually looks for this software to try to disable it, because they know they can't hide from MalwareBytes.

How can the Joomla CMS save sharks? And why?
OK, so Joomla isn't really saving them, but I just visited a website to sign a petition to save the Sharks of Palau, and I noticed the site was developed with Joomla.
I'm geek, whaddya want from me? A geek who swims with sharks.

Twice this got me. Used Windows Update to keep all the drivers updated. It tells me there is a new driver for my nVidia Geforce 6100 card. Great.
I install all the updates and restart the computer. All seems good, getting upto the Windows XP splash screen. Then, the screen goes blank. Not completely blank, just 99% blank. I can see a thin sliver of the background color of the desktop at the top of the screen. Ouch. Here comes a lost hour or so...

"Microsoft is tracking incompatible Web sites for its upcoming Internet Explorer 8 browser and has posted a list that now contains about 2,400 names — including Microsoft.com.
Apparently, even though Microsoft's IE8 team is doing the 'right' thing by finally making IE more standards-compliant, they are risking 'breaking the Web' because the vast majority of Web sites are still written to work correctly with previous, non-standards-compliant versions of IE."
OK, I'm a geek and I get a great chuckle out of this.

Resident Shield and/or Web Shield is not active
It seems a recent update for either Vista or AVG altered something with AVG being recognized by Windows Security Center. There is a mention of it on AVG website: http://www.avg.com/faq.num-1642#faq_1642
For those too lazy to follow the link for the FAQ, here is a copy of the info:

Just copy/paste content into a website. Easy, right? Should just take 2 minutes, right?
Wrong. Yes, it can be quick and simple to copy and paste into a web page, whether you are using Joomla, Wordpress, Dreamweaver or FrontPage/Expression. But how will it look? I noticed this after adding a simple copy of the Readme for RootKit Hunter the other day. A simple copy/paste of plain text took about a half-hour to properly format, which should remind Web Designers to consider that time in their expenses.

As I went to upgrade RootKit Hunter to it's latest version (for the web servers), I found it interesting that none of the announcements of the update gave installation instructions. Instead, they rely on the ReadMe file in the package.
That gave me an extra step to first download the package and review the ReadMe, instead of just quickly running the proper commands. (sorry, I don't memorize all instructions for all updates/patches).
So, for the sake of those needing a reminder of how to install RKH, here is the readme file from release 1.3.4. The package is available for download at https://sourceforge.net/projects/rkhunter/
